Chemistry with Analytical Science (BSc/MSci (Hons))

UCAS Code:    F180

Can you see yourself working in industry, a forensic or hospital laboratory, or even in the police force?  All forms of drug testing in sport need highly sensitive analytical techniques, and the improvements in detection owe much to advances in Analytical Chemistry.  If any of this catches your imagination, then perhaps our Chemistry with Analytical Science degree programme is for you.

Chemistry with Analytical Science is a Single Honours degree programme that leads to either a BSc (3 years) or MSci (4 years) qualification.  The Analytical Chemistry courses are given by staff from the School of Chemistry as well as by external experts in analytical and forensic science.

In the first two years, the Chemistry component covers core Inorganic, Organic and Physical Chemistry with associated laboratory work; ICT and presentation skills are also developed in several modules.  In this first year, students also take an Introduction to Analytical Techniques where they are introduced to all the advanced forms of mass spectrometry, NMR spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, as well as other important analytical techniques.  More advanced techniques are then introduced in Year 2 and 3 elective courses.   These Analytical Chemistry modules expose students to the full range of techniques used in modern laboratories in both academia and industry. For students on the BSc programme, Chemistry lectures in Year 3 are accompanied by a research project, whereas those students proceeding on to Year 4 will carry out an 80-credit research project in their final year, and choose from a wide-ranging set of lecture courses, which are pitched at the cutting edge of research and reflect the diverse research interests of staff in the School.
