Scholarships and Prizes

To encourage academic excellence, foster potential and reward achievement, the School of Chemistry is proud to offer a number of Scholarships for 2010 entry.

ALL Chemistry students satisfying the criteria below are guaranteed to receive one of our scholarships:

1.  Obtain ABB at A-Level (A in Chemistry)†

2.  Place Birmingham Chemistry as their firm choice before their UCAS deadline

† Students taking alternative qualifications (e.g.  International Baccalaureate) are also actively encouraged to apply and will be considered using an appropriate tariff point conversion.

EXCELLENCE SCHOLARSHIPS

UK/EU Students joining the School of Chemistry in 2010 are eligible to compete for Excellence Scholarships worth £5000 per year. These scholarships are renewable for each year of undergraduate study, providing the recipient is performing to first-class degree level (i.e. obtains full credits and a year mark >70%).  Successful students will typically have AAA at A level (or the equivalent). In addition to the eligibility criteria listed above, applicants are judged based on their A-level (or equivalent) transcripts and a short presentation that they make when they arrive.  Potential Excellence Scholars will be identified by the School and contacted before the start of the academic year to assist with their application.

10 Excellence Scholarships are available this year across the College of Engineering and Physical Sciences.  Chemistry has an excellent track record in winning these awards, receiving two in 2009 and two in 2008.

HAWORTH SCHOLARSHIPS

ALL UK/EU students who satisfy the above criteria and who do not receive an Excellence Scholarship will receive a Haworth Scholarship.  The number of these scholarships is unlimited and they are not means-tested.

The value of a Haworth Scholarship will depend on A-level results:

ABB (A in Chemistry) £1000 on entry to the School of Chemistry.

Students exceeding this minimum requirement will receive £500 for each additional A grade in A-levels from the approved subject list.

As an example, a student obtaining A grades in Chemistry, Physics, Mathematics and a Modern Language, will qualify for a Haworth Scholarship worth £2500 (i.e. £1000 entry + 3 x £500 for additional A grades in Physics, Mathematics and Modern Language)
